FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our systems utilize your oil and gas data efficiently to reduce time wastage, improve forecasting accuracy and cut costs.

Here you can find the answers to some of the many questions we have been asked about our software and services. If you have a question not addressed here, please contact us today and we will ensure you get an answer right away.

1. How can I plan an entire campaign of wells without having too much specific detail?
You can plan and statistically simulate a complete drilling campaign having only mean and standard deviations for phases. Those values can be calculated from your historical database or from external sources. Each one of these phases represents a building block of well archetype. Building these wells from the blocks can be through a series of questions-answers or manual selection from a library. Either way, a campaign of dozens of wells can be planned and re-planned easily, allowing users to test different scenarios. This can be done using the Genesis Campaign Builder product.
2. I don’t have any historical data but need to plan a well. Can you help?
Yes, you can statistically simulate and plan a well having only mean and standard deviations for operations. This can be achieve through different sources, either internal or external. It depends on the company profile and where the drilling area is located. We suggest you start accumulating historical data in a database, building up your future historical cases. With four historical wells, Genesis Planning and Follow Up software can use Monte Carlo simulation to demonstrate Risk Analysis for planning.
3. I have a few different legacy systems with drilling data. How can we combine and use this data together?
We have faced this issue many times and recommend using our custom data “translators/connectors” to bring the data from any source to one database. The process includes running Genesis Translator, developed for your data, and assigning a data QC (Quality Control) person to check on cleaning up the data and allocating unified Operation Codes to each Operation if required. You can use your own Company coding system or we can suggest a Genesis one. The main purpose of this process is to have a single coding system, so all available data could be accessible for data analyses and planning.
4. I want to create plots from our own database without having to ask the IT guys. How can I do that?
This is common request from many users. To address this problem we have developed the Genesis iVAC product which connects to any database on-the-fly. It can pool data from totally different databases, e.g. SQLServer database and Excel. The software extracts the data and allows the user to prepare it for any cross-plotting. In this case the user can easily define the plot’s parameters – what goes in X and Y axes, titles, colours etc. There is an unified reporting system which automatically combines all those plots in a single document at the press of a button.
5. Our database has some inconsistent data. How can you help us to clean the database?
All databases have data inconsistency, in one way or another. In order to find them we developed the GenXcheck module of the Genesis iVAC software which might be able to help you. It allows users to define their own data QC rules. The software can identify the errors and produce a report listing bad data records without overwriting data in the third party databases.
6. We are a small operator and want a lean service. What can you do for us?
This depends on what kind of data you have. If you have DDR Excels (or willing to enter data from printed forms) you can use Genesis ORS (Online Reporting System) which has a basic mechanism to enter or import data and plot some analytics on a web site.
7. We are a large operator, with very expensive campaigns. How can you help us to reduce our operational costs?
Reducing operational costs requires capital discipline, a thorough planning process and bringing all processes under control. There is no point in estimating the plan if the operations had a high duration disparity in the past. So, it’s important to look at how the company has managed its past history and captured the lessons learned. Benchmark all aspects of the well operation and systematically plan the new drilling campaign and you will reduce the operational costs. We have addressed all these issues in our Genesis Planning and Follow Up software and service.
9. We’ve already drilled a few wells in this region. How do we know if we are learning from our experience?
It is important to check if the organization is learning as it drills under the similar conditions. This can be compared by plotting each time component (operations, total time, trouble time, etc) ordered by date. This will give if there is a learning and how fast it is.
